
SWAC Open Sessions
The SWAC Terms of Reference commit SWAC to running a minimum of 6 Open Sessions a year. These sessions are held online and are open to anyone, in any role, working in a SWAC agency. They take the form of a presentation by a speaker, followed by questions and discussion, so are suitable for recording as CPD.
Child to Parent Violence-The Ultimate Taboo, and How Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) Can Stop It
— 7th December 2023 – 10.00-11.30 am
This session will be run by Gill Tree, the Founder and Director of Adoption Academy, who will be running a session on NVR. She will explain the principles behind NVR and how it can empower the parent, re-establish parental presence in the child’s mind, develop a cooperative, more harmonious relationship and redress the balance of power, in just a few months.
Pre-meets between prospective adopters and children before panel
— 17th January 2024 – 9.30-11.00 am
This session will explore practice in the Southwest and will be led by Elaine Dibben, independent social work consultant and panel chair and Heather Freeman, SWAC Project Lead and panel chair.
Secondary Trauma
— 14th February 2024 – 9.30-11.00 am
Alice, a trainee clinical psychologist, and Laura, an assistant clinical psychologist in Aspire, will be talking about secondary trauma, burnout and looking after yourself as an adoption worker.
Managing Family Time for Infants in EP Placements
— 12th March 2024 – 9.30-11.00 am
Ruth Copson from the UEA will run a session on Managing Family Time for Infants in EP placements: messages from research.
