When Simon and Matt adopted three-year-old twins, Callum and Kate, they knew life would change – but nothing prepared them for the challenges ahead. The twins had experienced early trauma and needed time to feel safe. Callum, in particular, had sensory needs and was neurodivergent. Both children were adjusting to a new home, new routines, and even new names.
Simon and Matt quickly realised that adoption can feel isolating. Friends and family wanted to help, but they didn’t always understand the complexities of trauma or the emotional strain of parenting children with additional needs.
That’s where CCS Adoption’s social groups made all the difference
The LGBTQ+ Coffee Mornings gave Simon and Matt a judgment-free space to meet other adopters, share experiences, and feel less alone. Seeing other families like theirs helped normalise adoption for the twins and reassured Simon and Matt that their challenges were understood.
Super Sense sessions were a lifeline for Callum. The sensory activities helped him regulate and explore safely, reducing meltdowns and building confidence. Kate loved the physical play too, and the sessions gave Simon and Matt practical ideas to support sensory needs at home.
Forest School opened up new experiences – like toasting marshmallows and using tools – that the twins would never have tried otherwise. These sessions boosted their confidence, taught them to follow instructions, and created positive memories that counterbalance early adversity.
Simon says:
“The groups are judgment-free. We feel understood – and less alone.”
Today
The twins are thriving. They look forward to every session, and Simon and Matt have built friendships that continue outside the groups. These supports didn’t just make life easier – they helped keep this family strong.
CCS Adoption’s Adoption Support ensures more families like Simon and Matt’s can access these vital, adoption-aware spaces – preventing crisis and giving children the chance to flourish.
